Down by the River I....

Cultivating community guardianship of the river Tweed through dance health and artistic practice

In 2023 Rhiana Laws was supported by Connecting Threads to lead an artistic exploration in and around the river Tweed, Scottish Borders.

At the heart of the project was the intention to use movement and creativity to facilitate a deepening individual and community relationship with the river Tweed, and water more broadly.

The project embraced working with 2 groups: wild swimmers in the waters of the Tweed, and Dance for Parkinson's on the riverbank. Rhiana collaborated with visual storyteller and photographer Huia Takau whose work populates these pages, dance artist Alex Saunders and cycling musician Robert Briggs. The project welcomed over 30 participants from across the Borders and Mid-Lothian between August to November 2023.

Explore the project through a selection of Huia Takau's images below.

Connecting Threads is the river culture strand of Destination Tweed, an ambitious project led by Tweed Forum and supported by The Southern Uplands Partnership to conserve, celebrate and promote the river Tweed from beyond the source to the sea.
